Finish: Satin / Mauve plum with subtle shimmer
Known Dupes: Illegal Cargo
Shale is an interesting shade; it actually reminds me a LOT of Quarry, but with more plummy mauve tones, whereas Quarry is more of a straight toned down purple. Shale did take me a while to warm up to, and it basically comes down to finding the right combinations for my skin tone. If you’re warm and you have had trouble wearing Shale, I’d recommend pairing it with warmer colors to see if that helps. I especially love wearing it in the crease with warmer purples on the lid. I’m glad I found ways to wear this, as it is a great base shade to have.

MAC eyeshadows used:
- Shale (on lid, below crease)
- Mythical LE (crease) – you could also use ‘Cranberry’ here
- Shadowy Lady (deepen outer crease and line upper and lower lashline)
- Orb (blend)

I have on Shale today! I used Shale on lid,Cork in crease,Kid above the crease ,Woodwinked outer lid, then Blanc Type to blend out and on brow bone..Shale looks good with Soft Brown,Copperplate and Grain too.

Thanks for the ideas! I wouldn’t have thought of pairing it with the browns you mentioned, but I may have to try them out and add them to the post – thanks! I thought about pairing it with Copperplate also, but it didn’t look like there would be enough differentiation between the two colors to me. I’ll have to play with it some more! 🙂
