Spotlight On: MAC Soba

Finish: Satin / Gold brown with gold shimmer

Soba is a neutral shade unlike any other in MAC’s collection because it is a straight gold-brown, truly a dirty gold brown shade. Typically I love anything and everything gold, but for some reason Soba fell short for me. I don’t know why, but it just looks odd on me and definitely isn’t one I see myself reaching for outside of the site on a normal, everyday basis. It made me look really tired. Ugh! I found it incredibly difficult to blend out of the crease if too much was applied; if you’re planning on wearing it there, apply a small amount with a fluffy brush like MAC’s #217, 286 or 224. If I had a favorite way to wear this one, it’d be #7. Strange one for me, still can’t understand why I don’t like it! How do you like Soba?

Look #1

MAC eyeshadows used:

  • Blonde’s Gold pigment (inner half of lid)
  • Soba (outer half of lid)
  • Mystery (outer corner of eye)
  • Soft Brown (crease)
  • Bisque (blend)

  1. Funny that you don’t like this one, seeing as it is so beautiful against your blue eyes! Also, how does Soba compare to Cork? Thanks, Zabrena! 🙂

      Heya Lisa!
Cork is a true matte brown, medium in its shade, whereas Soba is a shimmery golden-brown that has a dirty yellowed look to it. I’d go with Cork over Soba anyday! 🙂

  2. one and two are really pretty 🙂

i like the color of soba… when the color gets on the brush. i don’t know what is up with mac and the number of duds people seem to get, but this one seems to be sealed or pressed too hard. i take my short shader brush and literally CHISEL a layer off to get color.

I’ve had a few like that too, Joanna! Bamboo was one of them and I had to just throw it out after a while. I’m still debating on whether or not I want to try again. I had the same thing happen with Sushi Flower – first one was like you said, hard to get on the brush and the second was like butter. No clue!

      1. I love my Bamboo! You should try it again…I’ll admit that I am disappointed with Arena. It is tough to get any colour…

          Definitely, Vanessa!
Arena is a tough one to get to show, especially if you lean more tan in complexion.
I even have trouble with it; you wouldn’t think so, but I really have to layer it about three times.

  3. I agree with you Zabrena. It’s a very weird shade. I personally don’ t like it either. The color reminds me of the dust storms we have in AZ. Like you said it’s a dirty gold brown. A little too dirty looking for me.

Nice to know you think that too!
Haha! YEP! I could totally see a dust storm’s color in this one!

      1. I’m surprised that you still have this eyeshadow. 🙂 You must have had a lot of requests for new pics. You always do your best with an eyeshadow and try to make the color look good, but I just don’t like the color. If other ladies like it and it looks nice on them, then that’s great.

  4. Zabrena, you are going to laugh but can I ask a favour? Hubby’s taken me to Montreal for my birthday (we’ll be home the day after tomorrow) and I have never actually known my log on to your site. Could you email me my password, please, so I can see your looks while I’m a way (we’ve been out walking/shopping all day and so sitting here is just the break I need but, of course, without my password, I can’t see “nuttin'”). Many thanks!

  5. Zabrena, I actually love soba. I have brown hair, brown eyes, and a medium complexion. I use orb on the lid, soba in the crease and brule (my brow skin color go to) on the brow. Of course there is blending going on. This combination is beautiful on me. This is my everyday look and I receive many compliments. Hope someone else will try and maybe like.

  6. I’ve got Soba on the way, I requested it in exchange for something else. I was torn between it and Arena, and opted for Soba. We’ll see how it goes!

  7. Hi Zabrena, even tho ur not fond of Soba, I think u look beautiful in all ur looks. My favorite is look #3 & #6. Esp #3 cause I absolutely love MAC’s pigments.
