Spotlight On: MAC Soot

Finish: Matte / Deep slate gray

Of all the newly added PRO shades, I was so excited to see a matte gray shade and I simply couldn’t wait to try it out. After using it a couple times, I must say I am very impressed by it. Many of MAC’s shades apply splotchy on me and I have to really work with them to get that splotchy factor to go away, but Soot didn’t do that. It applies so smoothly and is even easier to blend into other colors. I feel like it has a purple base somewhere in there, because when you combine it with pinks and purples, it turns it more purple (see looks #3 and 4 to see what I mean). Very beautiful effect! It pairs amazingly well with other grays, blues, purples; Soot is a gorgeous shade of gray that is worthy of being a staple in your collection.

Look #1

MAC eyeshadows used:

  • Filament (inner half of lid)
  • Soot (outer half of lid)
  • Swiss Chocolate (crease)
  • Blanc Type (blend)

  1. Love look #2. SIGH….one more shadow you’re making me purchase (I’m just waiting for the next “free shipping” offer from MAC). You are a very dangerous person to know, Zabrena!

  2. Love both looks but especially look 1. Beautiful! 🙂 I’m taking your advice on Scene. I just purchased it so I’m not going to waste money buying a dupe. Thanks Z! 🙂

    1. Apparently Tilt is a reasonable dupe for it. I almost never buy blue eye shadows (most of the few I have came in palettes that were pre-made – UD’s BOSIII, for example) but I am SO glad I got Birds&Berries…it was a real fluke and I was quite nervous about using it at first but I just love it.

      1. I figured you were on your road trip, Zabrena, and sort of “incommunicado”! But I see you put up more looks for Soot which is almost painful because I tried to order it and it’s sold out just now but “ships soon”. I want to wait for the next free shipping offer – maybe it will be in by then.

Haha! Well, kinda. LOL I can’t stay away for long! 😀
I got the new camera the other day and just couldn’t wait to take a few pics with it! 🙂
Oh no! I can’t believe they’re sold out of it temporarily – must be popular! I wonder if they’re going to have any Black Friday offers?
Scene is also a good dupe if you have it!

          1. I don’t know about the US but here in Canada, MAC never has any specials – ever! Nothing at all. Never a gift with purchase…never a “sale” (for example, the items in their “good-byes” section online…like a fool, I used to think that maybe they’d be discounted even 10% but NOOOO! Sephora has knocked 40% off Tarina Tarantino because they’re getting rid of her line (you should head there and see if you can pick up some of her eye palettes – they are among the best I’ve ever tried. Okay, I am rambling and I have to dry my hair and get to bed!

        2. Hi Mariella,
You could look on eBay for Soot. They should have it. I just checked the U.S. site, and they have it and it was cheaper than MAC. It would be worth a look. I don’t know if you have a different eBay site in Canada or not.

          1. Thanks, Karah, but I’m a bit mistrustful of eBay because of the large # of fakes; it’ll be back in stock in a few days and I’m bound to get another “free shipping” offer so I’ll order it then.

  3. Really? I haven’t had any problems. How do you know if it’s a fake product? Ms. Z your more than welcome to give your opinion too. Since this is your website. LOL! 🙂 Thanks Mariella &Zabrena!
P.S. I was curious Mariella, what your top 10 MAC eyeshadows for cool toned skin are? I know we both have cool toned skin, and I know you have been using MAC longer than I have. Also, have you ever tried MAC foundation? Ok, I’ll leave you alone with all the questions. Thanks 🙂

Heya! Well, in my experience, when I first got into MAC I bought a couple of eyeshadows on eBay and they turned out to be fakes. I realized it because one was ‘Antiqued’ and it looked more like Brown Down than the red brown color we know to be Antiqued. I stayed away ever since.

BUT! If you’re careful, there are real MAC eyeshadows on eBay; same with brushes. The best way to tell is to know your color before buying and generally not to buy from sellers who are selling TONS of names of MAC eyeshadows without pictures or if the prices are too good to be true (i.e. $5). The good thing about eBay is that if you feel you got a fake when you receive it, you can report it and get your money back. 🙂

    2. If you google “Mac fakes on ebay” or similar, you’ll find some info. The thing is that the fakes are so good, it’s hard to tell and then what do you do if you have one? I’ll just wait til it’s back in stock (shouldn’t take long…). Hmmm, fave 10 Mac shadows is tough one. From the perm. range, I’d say Phloof, Mulch, either Naked Lunch or All that Glitters, Copperplate or Coquette, Brun, Typographic, Keep Your Cool (Pro-Longwear), Sweet Satisfaction(Pro-Longwear) and Charcoal Brown or maybe Omega (I hope that’s 10; I also love Patina, Twinks and a few others; it is really hard to choose!). As for foundations, I’ve got both Matchmaster and ProLongwear but my fave is actually Guerlain Lingerie de Peau.

      1. Thanks my sisters in makeup! Can’t wait for the Indian Ink spotlight Zabrena! I’m looking forward to the one on Twinks too. I have it and don’t know what to do with it. I had to get Mancatcher. What a beautiful color! I also got Birds & Berries. You too are such a bad influence on me! 🙂 LOL!
Now I’m going to have to check out Guerlain’s Lingerie de Peau. Do you purchase it online Mariella? Ms. Z, I saw that your going to do a Spotlight on Honesty . Did you see the MUA ratings for it? There not very good. Thanks again ladies! 🙂

Yes! I’m working on the Indian Ink Spotlight today, should be posted by the end of the day.
Oh, Mancatcher is something else, isn’t it?! LOVE that!
Haha! I’ve turned you into an addict too! 😀

I did see the bad ratings on Honesty, which made me curious about it.
I swapped another eyeshadow for it, so thankfully I didn’t *pay* for it, but I am up for the challenge!
I’ve found that other eyeshadows that were rated poorly (i.e. Beauty Marked) turned out to be my favorites, so who knows?! I’m intrigued! 🙂
‘Course if I hate it, I’ll be the first to say it LOL!

        2. Karah, I purchased Lingerie de Peau in-store. I tried it at Sephora and got a sample but then I was able to get it for “free” from a Canadian drugstore that has a points system and you can use the points like cash. Considering the price, it was nice to get it for free (it’s not really free, as my husband points out to me) but I wouldn’t hesitate to repurchase with cash from my wallet. I don’t really enjoy purchasing makeup online and really only do it when I have no other option (they’re sold out at the counter but still have what I want online).

          1. Thanks Mariella, about the info on Lingerie de Peau. I wish they had more shades though. Guerlain doesn’t have a light of enough shade for me. They’re were quite a few people online discussing this. You would think they listen and make more lighter shades!

  4. LOVE all of these looks! # 3 is so unique!! # 1 I just love pinks and greys together, one of my favorite combos. Good job ZEE! I have not seen Soot in person but will swatch next time I am in the store!

YAY! So glad you enjoyed, G!
I think you had mentioned wanting to get Scene before too – Soot is a darker dupe of it, so depending on if you want something strong or light, just thought I’d mention that. They’re VERY similar! 🙂 XOXO!

  5. Look #4 & #6 are my favorites! I love shading the inner and outer corner of my lids with a pop of colour in the middle of the lid, really suits my eye shape. Thanks for the updates Zabrena!

  6. Great to see this “spotlight” back! #5 and 6 are my personal faves. I don’t have Idol Eyes and I’m not likely to get it (it’s a Lustre, I think, and those are frequently less than ideal) but I do have several similar colours. We’re out for dinner with a bunch of friends from uni days tomorrow night, and I might just be giving #6 and “outing”.

    1. YAY! Yeah, definitely avoid IE! I just threw it in there because I know some people have it and like it.
I wish it weren’t so glittery; I do love the color though. 🙁
      Have fun tomorrow!

      1. I tried out look #6 today (I used a TF shadow in place of Idol Eyes) and just loved the look! So I’ll be wearing this eye look tonight. Quite looking forward to it!
