Spotlight On: MAC Crystal Avalanche

crystalavalancheFinish: Veluxe Pearl / White with reflects

My first impression of Crystal Avalanche was an anticipation of my experience with Vellum. I expected more of a duochrome shade, and it is just slightly, but this is more of a buttery white shade that offers a variety of ways to be worn on the eyes. This actually reminds me of a cleaner (less dirty looking) version of Shroom. I really enjoy wearing this on the lid and layering it over darker colors to change their appearance (see look #3). If you swatch this color in natural sunlight, you will see a very faint hint of purple duochrome, but it’s very light. Overall, this is a very versatile color I was actually pleasantly surprised by!

Look #1

MAC eyeshadows used:

  • Crystal Avalanche (inner 2/3 of lid)
  • Delft Paint Pot LE (in crease)
  • Greensmoke (layered over Delft)
  • Black Tied (outer third of lid)
  • Blanc Type (blend)

  1. Very nice Zabrena! Really beautiful. Another eyeshadow I’m going to have to get. 🙂 I’ve been thinking of this one for awhile, but I thought maybe its just another highlighter. Thankfully, you did a Spotlight on Crystal Avalanche and changed my mind! 🙂

  2. Hello! I am very new here, and I would like first of all to thank you for what you are doing! It is really amazing, I have tried already some of your looks with the eyeshadows I’ve had for ages but almost never used, and now I am in love with these shades again)) I would like to try some of the looks above, but I do not have Crystal Avalanche. It seems by description that it is quite close to Flawless Figure which is a Veluxe Pearl LE from the palette All Woman from the relatively new Strength collection… In case you have seen the shade, could you kindly give your opinion on the similarity of it with Crystal Avalanche? Thx)

    1. Hi! Welcome to the site! Thank you for being a member! 🙂 I’m not familiar with the shade you mentioned from the All Woman palette so I can’t say; I don’t want to give you the wrong advice. Crystal Avalanche is VERY close to Shroom, so you could use it too to recreate a lot of these looks. Urban Decay’s Venus would be a close dupe too! 🙂

  3. Zabrena,
I am so going tohave to try to recreate look #1. Was thinking of trying vex…i dont have the delft paint pot. So awesome….. in my survey i mentioned this shade! Thanks for giving some uses for this and blanc type! You really are incredible! Thanks for taking the time to listen and for you artistry and skill! Amazes me each time Icome to your web site! Thanks again Zabrena….so happy i joined. Ps. I wanted to try to send you some pics of looks but my old wrinkly eyelids look so horrible compared to your beautiful lids…lol.

    1. Hi Krista!
You could try putting any blue there instead of Delft – ones like Freshwater, Electric Eel, Winkle, Moon’s Reflection, Tilt. That would give a very similar effect! 🙂 Aww, I’m so happy to be of service and I’m glad you’re enjoying the site!
I would love to see your looks! I’m sure your eyes are beautiful!!

Thank you for responding to the survey! I am planning on putting all the results together within the next week and building a list of the most requested eyeshadows and definitely taking the other feedback into consideration too. This website wouldn’t be what it is without YOURS and so many of the other lovely members’ great ideas! 🙂 Many more exciting things planned for the members section too, coming soon! 😉

  4. Zabrena,
Like everyone else I love look 1, but I have some trouble with Greensmoke. It looks more muddy than green on me, if that makes any sense! LOL! I saw some pretty greens on Coastal Scents and I thought I would try mixing one with Greensmoke. To see if it will help bring out the green in Greensmoke. I don’t know if it will work or not but if it does ,or if I like Coastal Scents eyeshadows, I’ll let you know. Hopefully I’ll get to it soon. If you didn’t have so many great looks on your site, I would probably get to it sooner! LOL! That’s a great thing though. 🙂

    1. I can understand what you mean about Greensmoke, it’s such a weird shade!
If you do get one of the Coastal Scents eyeshadows, please do let me know what you think!
I’m going to be including Greensmoke in the next round of site wide updates, so we’ll see if I can find a way to make it appear more “green” than what it really is 😉

      1. Hi Z,
I wondering if you would think about doing a Ricepaper Spotlight under your MAC Highlighter’s section. I would like to know what shadows it looks best with. I never know what to pair it with.
