MAC Fiction: A Better Version of Greensmoke?

fiction

Lookie at what MAC re-released! Unfortunately I missed the boat when Fiction was originally in circulation, circa 2004 (I wasn’t even interested in makeup back then, can you believe it?!), so to say I was excited to see this particular color is an understatement. One of our great friends here on the site, Mariella, alerted me to its release and compared it to Greensmoke, but without the overloaded glitter formula that I know has given most of us issues before.

MAC describes this shade as a “muted green with shimmer” and this shade comes to us in a more tame, easier to control Frost finish. I really love Frost finishes, don’t you? Make them all like that, MAC! Just kidding, but seriously, ditch the whole Lustre thing … mmmkay?

Swatched next to Greensmoke, you can see the difference already. Compared to Greensmoke, Fiction has a MUCH better finish, and is actually much more pigmented than Greensmoke. In the swatch (shown right) I had to layer Greensmoke about three times just so you could see it, whereas I only applied Fiction with one layer.

I swear I want to go back and try all of my favorite Greensmoke combinations with Fiction now! What a difference! If you like the idea of having a non-glitter version of Greensmoke, make sure you grab yours while you still can. I promise you won’t regret it!

In today’s look, I chose to wear it in more of a neutral combo, but I did pair it up with some matte red lips to spice things up. Like Greensmoke, Fiction is one of those green eyeshadows you can pair up with red lips because it’s still so neutral in tone.

Will you be getting Fiction? How will you wear it?

      1. Can’t wait to use it, I’ll just switch it out in my palette. Wonder if greensmoke wet for a lower lashline liner would work.

  1. Beautiful, beautiful color! I’ve avoided Greensmoke because of the Lustre finish, which just gives me fits. Now I might have to go visit the MAC counter and add Fiction to my collection.

    1. I think it’s not available in-store. I think you have to order online, which is annoying (I like making purchases from the nice ladies at my local MAC counter but really wanted to get Fiction before it was gone so I caved and ordered it online with a free shipping offer)

  2. I am SO delighted that you like Fiction, Zabrena! As I said earlier, I was worried that you might not like it as much as I do so reading that you do has me doing a happy dance! It’s a strange colour for them to be re-releasing in Springtime (it’s such an autumnal shade) but I don’t really care because I love it so much. It’s true that MAC’s Lustre finish shadows look so pretty in the pan but you can never get anywhere near that look when you put the shadow on your eyes. That’s why I like using Sin Primer Potion under Tempting shadow – it’s the only way to get it to look “pan-like” on the lid.

    1. OMG, I freaking love it, Mariella! I agree it is a strange color given all the outrageous colors that have been coming onto the scene here lately (i.e. UD’s Electric palette … what?!). Oh, and I did swatch the Electric palette in the store and the shades stained my fingers! Agh! That was when I was like “Nope! You are not staining my eyes, too!” I could see layering Tempting with Sin creating a great, easier effect! Super tip!

      1. You do so many looks that you’ve probably forgotten – I suggested that tip with Sin and Tempting and not only did you try it, you put a look using it in the Tempting Spotlight! I know what you mean about the Electric palette (and apologies to anyone who loves it) – I only saw photos and and all I could think of was those bright painting pots I had when I was a kid – it had all the sophistication of those, which is NONE. I did get the Kat Von D Monarch palette the other day but I’ve kept my bill because I recall you had problems with her shadows so just in case I develop a reaction (fingers crossed not). It is a really beautiful palette. Not exactly “hold grail” but really, really nice.

        1. HAAAAA! Well that figures! I went back and looked and you’re right! Geeez, almighty!
If you have a reaction to the Monarch palette, please do let me know. I so badly want to continue trying her palettes, but am so afraid to do so!
Hee hee, yep! That was my thought on the Electric palette, too! Eeegads!

  3. oooohhhh, I think I will be adding this to my collection! I don’t have Greensmoke but was tempted when I saw some of your earlier combos with it. This looks amazing!

  4. Hi,
I got this one when it first was Re-released. I haven’t tried it yet but now I’m going to have to! 🙂 I wanted to ask you if you have tried MAC’s Red lipstick? It’s has a lovely red/blue base to it. Making it more wearable for cool toned or fair ladies. Hope your doing well.

    1. Yes! You must! I can see this one being SO beautiful on a cool complexion!
Haven’t tried Red! Hmm! I am looking to get more lippie samples, I’ve added it to the list! Thank you! I need to start doing more lippie reviews again, those were fun. 🙂 Thinking of you, Hun! xoxo!

  5. Because I already own Greensmoke, and because I only typically wear Greensmoke on the outer half of the eye, I will probably not get Fiction at this time…but I do wish it was available prior to my purchase of Greensmoke! I can definitely see the difference! So it’s back after a 10 year absence? Wow! Hmmmm…maybe an in-person visit to the MAC store should happen before I make a final decision 😀

    1. That makes sense! I would say if you want to use Greensmoke all the time, but avoid it due to the glitter finish, Fiction is a must have! But yeah, if you’re not using it much, you can safely skip this one. What in the world takes MAC so long to bring shades like this back!? I tell ya!

  6. Mine should be delivered on Friday! I hope it’s “the one”. In my hunt for the perfect olivey neutral I’ve already tried and discarded Greensmoke (too difficult to work with) the Cargo dupe (fallout city) and RBR Olive Violetear (satin? I don’t think so!).

  7. Bother and bugger! I love this but my sister in law has left the States. I really struggle here to pay over $30 for an eyeshadow.

    1. Argh, I would struggle with that too, Tracey! That’s ridiculous! 🙁
If you’d like me to order one for you, just let me know; I can send you an invoice through PayPal for the eyeshadow and shipping 🙂
      Feel free to email me!

    2. I’m also feeling your pain of the cost of Mac where l live. $26 for the pan and $33 for the pot. We also have many products not available to us and sometime the shipping costs are to much to justify purchasing from America.

  8. I bought Fiction when it first came out on suggestion from a MAC counter. I’ve been eking it out ever since I discovered it was a LE. Needless to say, I bought two when I discovered they had re-released it! 🙂

I actually have been using it as a replacement for all the green-hued shadows you use on the site with much success. Nice to know I don’t need to bother getting green smoke.

    1. I like it! 🙂 I think you may be thinking of my aversion to red lipsticks, but I really do like Russian Red! 🙂 Thank you for the compliment, Tracey!

  9. Just ordered Fiction online. Went to Mac this morning and found out you can only purchase this online. They also had Diesel and Butterscotch eye shadows so l ordered them as well.

    1. That’s a bummer, wonder why they’re only selling them online …? 🙁 At least they’ve stopped charging for shipping online, now, thankfully! 🙂

      1. I posted this further up in the thread. MAC does this with all the “By Request” products, which ticks me off big time. They did it when they repromoted Moth Brown last year (or 2 years ago?). I wanted to get it but wanted to see it in person first to see how much it was like about 10 other shadows I already have. When I found it was online only, I got annoyed. I find this disrespectful to customers and also to their own stores, counters and employees! I really like “my” MAC saleswomen and prefer to purchase from them. So I missed out on Moth Brown.

  10. Just got it today. It looks great with my brown eyes. Looking forward to new combos with this eyeshadow, Zabrena.

  11. Can Fiction compare to Smoke & Diamonds? Also, has Hocus Pocus a dupe or similar within the MAC catalogue? Thanks

    1. Hi Maris!
I wouldn’t compare Fiction to Smoke and Diamonds, as S&D is very gray whereas Fiction is a dark green, more comparable to Greensmoke. I don’t have Hocus Pocus so unfortunately I can’t say if it has a dupe in MAC’s lineup, my apologies!

  12. Mine arrived today and I also got star violet, I put them both on my hand to see them and they went quite nice together!

  13. Zabrena, any chance you will be doing more looks or a “spotlight” using Fiction? I’d love to see some ideas. Also, are you getting any of the new MAC Alluring Aquatics shadows? I got the gold/green one called Sea Worship and I’m blown away by how beautiful it is. I may stop in and get one or 2 more shades, though most are colours for which I have dupes. But they are beauties!

    1. So funny you should ask! LOL! I’m planning a Spotlight with it on June 1 😉 I normally would not Spotlight a limited edition shade, but because it’s a dupe for Greensmoke (a better one at that), and either can be used, I thought a post was appropriate, so coming soon! I have been considering some of the new shades, too, they look soooo pretty!

  14. I just did this look using fiction, brun but used Folie in the crease as I don’t have Soft Brown or the other colors mentioned for the crease. I love the look. Thanks Z
